Our Aims

To build a unifying voice for African nurses and midwives in health, social care and education institutions

Objectives:

 

  1. To provide a safe, confidential platform that enables member organizations / members to share their work / training experiences, concerns and ideas
  2. To enable members to network effectively, sharing learning from each organisation
  3. To work with statutory organisations, e.g. NHSE, NMC, PHE, HEE, CQC, etc to ensure evidence based policy implementation to improve equity and reduce racism and bullying in the workplace
  4. To work towards partnerships with health and social care, statutory and non-statutory organisations so as to support the implementation of evidence based good practice in relation to equality
To work towards Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for all African nurses and midwives in health and social care provision and training

Objectives:

 

  1. To lead on specific areas affecting African nurses and midwives and provide advice, e.g. reducing late referrals and diagnosis of breast cancer, supporting the provision of equitable care for African mothers in labour, providing evidence based information relating to vaccinations
  2. To provide expert advice on matters affecting African nurses and midwives, e.g. proposed solutions to the prospect of them being out of employment on the 1st April 2022 because of their concerns about COVID19 vaccinations
  3. Participating in local community events focusing on key health issues that promote health and well being for African communities, including accessible services
  4. Leading on policy implementation for equality , diversity and inclusion in the workplace and learning environment
  5. To provide a forum for ongoing review of whether improvements are being made following the implementation of evidence based guidance
To provide guidance and signposting that supports professional development and research

Objectives:

  1. To organise and support conferences, seminars, webinars etc from member organisations and other appropriate forums
  2. To support mentoring schemes, including providing a list of mentors as appropriate to enable members to truly reach their potential
  3. To signpost members / member organisations to research opportunities, funding and scholarships/ sponsorships to support their training and development
Celebrating and recognizing the achievements of the SOANAM

Objectives:

  1. Identifying areas for recognition as per agreed criteria among member organisations
  2. Nominating member organisations and individual members to recognise their individual or group contribution to improving the experience of African nurses and midwives
  3. Promoting the work and achievements of the SOANAM through a variety of channels, e.g. social media, and the newsletter
  4. Organizing fundraising events and exploring other methods for fundraising for the organisation
To promote excellence in curriculum design, delivery and evaluation for health and social care programmes with the aim of promoting the development of the future nurse and midwife.
